“I have a dream.” Easily one of the most recognizable statements of all time.
Even my five-year-old knows who said it.

We love a dream—especially a big dream.

But no one really talks about the weight of a big dream. The reality that you wake up each day carrying both today's responsibilities and the vision of tomorrow. That gap between where you are and where you want to be can feel overwhelming, almost suffocating at times. (repeating because well.. it's so true) That gap between where you are and where you want to be can feel overwhelming, almost suffocating at times.

I fall into this trap often. Feeling like my daily actions didn’t bring me closer to where I wanted to go. Like I’m running in place. One day spills into the next, and suddenly, progress feels invisible.

But this past Sunday, while spending some time with the guy upstairs, I felt the simplest yet most profound direction:

Take ground this week.

Now, 80% of you might be thinking: Yeah, no sh*t that’s how it works. You take ground and move forward every day.

But for those of us who live with our heads in the clouds (and maybe have the blessing of ADHD), that’s not how our brains operate. We don’t just take some ground—we try to take all the ground, all at once. The whole arena, the entire land, by Friday...or preferably Thursday afternoon.

And then, inevitably, we become ineffective.

So, instead of trying to conquer the whole world by the weekend, here are five ways to take ground this week—sustainably, effectively, and without losing yourself in the process.

1. Define What “Taking Ground” Means for You

Progress looks different for everyone. What’s one key area that, if moved forward even slightly, would make the biggest difference? It could be a conversation, a project, a habit—just get clear on what matters most this week.

2. Win the First Hour of Your Day

How you start your day sets the tone for everything else. Whether it’s prayer, movement, planning, or quiet reflection, be intentional about your first hour. Ground yourself before you step into the battlefield. Pro Tip* staff off that phone.

3. Think in Steps, Not Leaps

Small, consistent actions build momentum faster than sporadic, overwhelming bursts...as fun as they are Instead of tackling the entire dream, ask yourself: What’s one step I can take today? Then, take that step.

4. Close the Loops

Unfinished tasks drain mental energy. Identify one thing you’ve been avoiding or leaving unfinished—an email, a conversation, a decision—and close that loop. The relief will free up space to move forward.

5. Celebrate the Ground You Take

It’s easy to focus on what’s left to do, but don’t ignore what you have done. Take a moment each day to acknowledge the ground you’ve taken. Progress, no matter how small, deserves recognition.

Your dream is real. But it’s built one step at a time... as unsexy as that truth is🚀
